Community Visions Unlimited transformed a section of the Faubourg St. John Neighborhood in New Orleans. There were over 100 vacant, blighted buildings in a 5x5 block area. In just 1 year, through CVU's efforts, over 15 properties were restored. In 3 years over 78 projects were completed, a police detail implemented and 3 community gardens installed. For this work CVU was awarded the Presidential Service Award, JC Penny Golden Rule, Louisiana Preservation Alliance, St. Paul Innerfaith Community, and the Mayor's Golden Hammer.
In Petersburg Virginia CVU assisted in setting up Landmark Resource Center and getting over 75 restoration projects underway in a 3 year period. This project concentrated on downtown and 7 surrounding neighborhoods.
After Hurricane Katrina devasted over 85% of the neighborhoods in New Orleans CVU decided to expand their mission to include all of Orleans parish. One of the first projects that came to mind was in the creation of the "New Orleans Street Gallery." This will create an impetus for artists to get recognition while creating beauty to assist the neighborhoods in their recovery. With the continued promotion it will also create economic development in the neighborhoods.
